Do wealth distributions follow power laws? Evidence from ¬タリrich lists¬タル

چکیده

We use data on the wealth of the richest persons taken from the ‘rich lists’ provided by business magazines like Forbes to verify if the upper tails of wealth distributions follow, as often claimed, a power-law behaviour. The data sets used cover the world’s richest persons over 1996–2012, the richest Americans over 1988–2012, the richest Chinese over 2006–2012, and the richest Russians over 2004–2011. Using a recently introduced comprehensive empirical methodology for detecting power laws, which allows for testing the goodness of fit as well as for comparing the power-law model with rival distributions, we find that a power-lawmodel is consistentwith data only in 35%of the analyseddata sets. Moreover, even if wealth data are consistent with the power-law model, they are usually also consistentwith some rivals like the log-normal or stretched exponential distributions. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Double power laws in income and wealth distributions

Close examination of wealth distributions reveal the existence of two distinct power law regimes. The Pareto exponents of the super-rich, identified, for example in rich lists such as provided by Forbes, are smaller than the Pareto exponents obtained for top earners in income data sets. Our extension of the Slanina model of wealth is able to reproduce these double power law features. c © 2008 E...

Complex network model of the phase transition on the wealth distributions - from Pareto to the society without middle class

A model of distribution of the wealth in a society based on the properties of complex networks has been proposed. The wealth is interpreted as a consequence of communication possibilities and proportional to the number of connections possessed by a person (as a vertex of the social network). Numerical simulation of wealth distribution shows a transition from the Pareto law to distribution with ...

Power-law Distributions in Circulating Money: Effect of Preferential Behavior

Empirical studies on many social issues show that numerous statistical distributions follow power laws, such as stock-price fluctuations, the probability distribution of the population of cities, the degree distributions in many networks and distribution of income or wealth. In particular, the wealth distribution which is an old topic has recently been renewed by a small band of econophysicists...

In situ and photogrammetric measurements of avalanche crown transects

We present results on the geometry and depth distributions for transects along the crowns of small to large avalanches. Previous research suggests that power laws in aggregate distributions of crown depths result from observers recording maximum depth. We therefore studied individual crown transects to obtain information about the parent distributions, using in situ and photogrammetric measurem...

World heritage and the contradictions of ¬タリuniversal value¬タル

This article critically appraises the notion of ‘universal value’ as a core principle underpinningWorldHeritage Sites. It does so through examination of GöremeOpen-AirMuseum, a cultural tourism site of cave Byzantine churches in central Turkey. Focusing on the contestation surrounding the frescoes within the Byzantine churches, the article discusses tensions relating to the non-iconographic nat...
